Enter the Rubicon, and you will find your own point of no return. A "Rubicon" is defined as "a bound or limiting line, one that when crossed commits one to an irrevocable change or decision". The Rubicon marks our first foray in to the realm of full sized trail packs. As it is a Wookey first, we have crossed our own Rubicon, and now commit yourself, and strap one on!
With more features than you can shake an ice axe at the Rubicon is truly a do-it all. The Wookey Rubicon (like all of our packs) has a huge mesh internal pocket for hydration systems and a specialized tube exit aperture. Ruby also has dual daisy chains, dual ice-axe tubes (that also work great for a snow shovel handle), four compression straps and is available with or without the top pocket.
At 4620 ci, the Wookey Rubicon will out perform any pack in its category. The largest panel loader in our lineup, the Ruby carries heavy loads with ease. For the Ruby, we enhanced the frame system found on our Juggernaut and Serac. In addition to the Delrin® rod found on its two smaller counterparts, we added a 2024 T-4 aluminum stay that can be curved to form exactly to one's back. The 2024 is a lightweight alloy that is super-stiff yet is malleable enough to for our factory tech experts to form, and can be micro-adjusted to fit you by an in store Wookey sales professional.
The Delrin® rod in the Rubicon has been recurved to give enhanced head clearance while maintaining the perfect load transfer to the hip belt. The springy Delrin® rod works as active load suspension by bearing the tension of the load-compression straps and the inner compression system, thus preventing the weight of the load from hanging off of the framesheet. The rod also helps center and balance the load while maintaining the streamlined shape of the pack. The frame system also incorporates a high strength, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) framesheet and a full length foam pad.
The Wookey Rubicon combines both 1000 denier and 500 denier Dupont Cordura Plus® for outstanding durability while keeping the pack weight low. Go ahead and compare the weight to other packs of similar size and you will be pleasantly surprised! We used the 1000 denier for areas that will get higher exposure to rough surfaces and used the 500 denier for areas that don't get much abrasion. Like all of our packs we protected the bottom with a 1250 denier ballistics cloth.
We used the YKK Uretek® water-resistant zippers for the exterior pocket closures, eliminating the need for storm flaps and reducing the weight. The Rubicon sports three spacious external pockets in addition to the top-pocket and features a zippered bottom sleeping bag compartment that is separated from the main compartment by a compression flap.
The top pocket on the Rubicon is removable and transforms in to a hip-pack in about 180 seconds by using the hip-belt found on the pack (INSTRUCTIONS). You could also buy an extra hip-belt and you wouldn't have to take the hip-belt off of your pack to set it up. The best part is that the top lid really is a hip-pack! Most conversion systems out there have a bunch of extra skirting material on the top lid. Because ours eliminates the need for the skirting it you have a hip-pack that is free of unnecessary clutter. The zippered access is closed using a YKK® urethane zipper the top-pocket has tow water bottle holders that are made to specifically fit the Nalgene® one liter bottles.
The harness systems on the Rubicon are typically found only on larger packs. The shoulder harness and hip belt are fully removable, replaceable, sizable, and are constructed using proprietary techniques that we can not talk about, even here (USE AND FITTING INSTRUCTIONS). The shoulder harnesses are not only ergonomically "S" curved, but are also curved over the shoulder, adding a third dimension to our tailoring. These straps are hands down the best on the market. The foam is a triple density laminate wrapped in Cordura® and our breathable Cordura® mesh. The hip belt has its own framesheet that forms a spoon shape that is just great on the hips. The framesheet and dual density foam allow our hip-belt to carry as much of the load of the pack as you want to put on it. The hip-belt automatically cants to the angle of your hips and works with the motion of your pelvis as you walk, run and climb. Both the shoulder harness and hip-belt work concomitantly with the frame system to provide you with a pack that delivers peak performance, no matter what you are carrying.
